Why Florida Gutter Math Comes Out Different
Rainfall intensity, not annual total, is what sizes a gutter. Polk County gets much of its rain in short high-intensity summer bursts, the kind that dump an inch in twenty minutes on a July afternoon. A gutter sized for a mild climate's steady rain sheets straight over the front edge under that load, which is why so many Florida homeowners think their gutters are clogged when they are simply undersized. Five-inch K-style handles most single-story Polk County homes. Six-inch is the right call when a large roof area drains to one run, when a steep pitch accelerates the water, or when a valley dumps into a single section.
Downspouts Matter More Than Gutter Size
Adding a downspout is almost always cheaper than upsizing a whole run, and it fixes overflow faster. The other half of the question is where the water goes once it leaves. Dumping a downspout at the corner of the slab is the default builder answer and the wrong one, particularly in Polk County, where karst limestone geology means repeatedly concentrating water in one spot next to the foundation is exactly what you do not want to do. Extensions, splash blocks, or a buried drain line all work, and all of them cost very little compared with the rest of a gutter job. It is the cheapest line item on the quote to get right.
You Probably Do Not Need Gutters on Every Elevation

Partial gutter is a legitimate answer and it costs less than wrapping the house. Be a little suspicious of a bid that wraps everything without asking where the water is bothering you. One caveat on sequencing: if a new roof is also on your list, do the roof first, because new drip edge changes the geometry the gutter has to catch and roofers tend to dent brand new gutter.
